Job Description
As a researcher in the Nearmap Design team, you will play a critical role in delivering high-quality user experiences to Nearmap customers. You will help the team deepen their understanding of customers' contexts, motivations, goals, and behaviors. Using a mixed-methods research approach, you will translate evidence-based insights into accessible and actionable stories that inspire the design team to ideate and solve customer problems innovatively. Reporting to the Principal UX Researcher, this remote, full-time permanent position is based in the United States. As a customer advocate, you will inspire change across teams by building empathy through research and delivering excellent user experiences across Nearmap products and services.
Key Responsibilities
Research process and delivery
- Leads strategic user research initiatives across the product development lifecycle, ensuring delivery of exceptional user experiences from discovery through post-launch evaluation.
- Designs and executes mixed-method research studies to uncover deep customer insights that drive both tactical improvements and strategic design and product direction.
- Partners with cross-functional teams to refine research questions that address both immediate needs and long-term experience goals.
- Manages participant recruitment to ensure diverse, representative sampling for high-quality insights.
- Transforms complex research findings into clear, actionable insights that enable stakeholders to make informed decisions that elevate the user experience.
- Crafts compelling research narratives and presentations that inspire teams to deliver premium user experiences.
- Continuously refines research approach by soliciting feedback on methodology, plans, and insights to ensure maximum impact on user experience.
Research excellence
- You uphold the highest ethical standards in research practice, ensuring informed consent, protecting participant privacy, maintaining data security, and advocating for inclusive and accessible research practices that respect all users.
- You maintain rigorous standards in research design, ensuring appropriate sample sizes, unbiased question framing, valid data collection protocols, and systematic analysis approaches that produce reliable and actionable insights.
- You go beyond surface-level observations to uncover root causes and latent needs, ensuring insights are substantiated with strong evidence, contextualized within broader user journeys, and connected to meaningful user outcomes.
Quality of user experience
- User experience quality indicators: You identify and track leading indicators of user experience quality from micro-interactions to key journeys, helping teams catch and address experience degradation.
- Design decision impact: You measure the impact of design changes through iterative testing and longitudinal studies, providing evidence-based guidance on which design approaches deliver the highest quality experience.
- Continuous tracking and monitoring systems: You establish approaches for ongoing experience measurement, creating reports and regular research cadences that helps teams maintain high experience quality standards.
Qualifications
Experience
- 2+ years of experience as a UX/Design Researcher working with digital products and services.
- Demonstrates experience planning and conducting various research methodologies including usability testing (moderated and unmoderated), concept testing, in-depth user interviews and surveys.
- Experience with both generative and evaluative research methods.
- Proven ability to select the research method for the project goals.
- Experience leading complete ‘end to end’ user research projects from defining research questions to delivering actionable insights through clear and engaging reports and presentations.

- Proficient research craft: Demonstrates mastery of diverse research methods across the entire spectrum (generative and evaluative research), expertly selecting and adapting the approach to deliver actionable (strategic and tactical) insights that will help deliver excellent level of user experience.
- Collaboration: Builds trusted partnerships within the design, engineering and other internal teams. Engages the team with the complete ‘end-to-end’ research process from research planning to insights sharing.
- Data synthesis and storytelling: Transforms the data collected from research into compelling narratives and connects the insights to the key goals and user experience metrics.
- Communication: Presents research findings with impact, facilitates workshops and sessions. Creates accessible research documentation and ensures the insights are consumed and acted upon by the teams through strong verbal, written and visual communication.
- Strategic thinking: Proactively identifies research opportunities, balances tactical studies with the foundational research to drive both immediate and long-term impact.
- Technical competency: Leverages research tools and platforms effectively, understands basic analytics and data querying. Stays current with emerging research methodologies.

Tertiary Qualifications
