About the Role
Firestorm Labs is seeking a skilled and driven Field Service Engineer (FSE) to join our growing team, supporting the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of HP 3D printers and adjacent additive manufacturing equipment. In this role, you’ll be on the front lines delivering high-caliber service, ensuring uptime, and helping customers maximize the value of their 3D printing systems.
You’ll be joining a mission-driven company pushing the boundaries of advanced manufacturing, with a direct impact on customer success and product performance. As the face of Firestorm Labs in the field, you’ll ensure exceptional technical support and customer satisfaction. We're looking for someone who’s equally comfortable with hands-on troubleshooting, clear technical communication, and supporting cross-functional teams like engineering, and operations.
What You’ll Do
- Install, commission, maintain, and repair 3D printers and related equipment at customer sites
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM), diagnostics, hardware repairs, calibrations, and software/firmware updates
- Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on 3D printing systems and supporting infrastructure, including HVAC and compressed air systems
- Assemble, test, and calibrate mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues using tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, calipers, and wiring diagrams
- Train customers, end users, and partners on safe and effective equipment use and maintenance best practices
- Collaborate with engineering on escalated issues and provide field feedback to drive product improvements
- Support cross-functional stakeholders and operations teams with technical insights during customer interactions and lifecycle management
- Develop or refine technical service procedures and documentation
- Maintain accurate service records, including repairs, parts usage, and customer interactions
- Manage escalations from the team and customers, providing timely resolution and support.
- Develop and maintain workflows and release environments in collaborative platforms (e.g., SharePoint, ARENA, Jira).
- Partner with customers to deeply understand their needs, engineering challenges, and problem sets.
- Follow all safety, security, lab, and manufacturing protocols
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or related field; may substitute equivalent hands-on experience in lieu of a degree
- Minimum 5 years operating, maintaining, or repairing complex machinery in lab or manufacturing environments
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in field service, technical support, or machine repair roles
- U.S. Citizenship required due to ITAR regulations & the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance
- Strong troubleshooting skills in mechanical, electrical, or pneumatic systems (mastery in at least one area preferred)
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, calibration devices)
- Excellent collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering and field operations teams
- Proficient technical writing skills for documenting systems, procedures, and troubleshooting guides
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently in dynamic environments
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience servicing 3D printers, specifically HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) series
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing technologies (FDM, SLS, SLA)
- Experience servicing industrial, semiconductor, optics, or precision manufacturing equipment
- Proven ability to service, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC and compressed air systems in industrial or manufacturing environments
- Knowledge of 3D printing materials (thermoplastics, photopolymers, metals, ceramics)
- Basic CAD experience and ability to interpret technical drawings
- Understanding of enterprise networks, OS management, and printer IT integration
- Experience with service management tools and platforms
- Military service or startup experience is a plus
Work Environment
- Based at our Headquarters in San Diego, CA
- This role requires an on-site presence
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record to support offsite deployments
- Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. and wear appropriate PPE [as required]
- Willingness to travel up to 50% domestically and internationally for field operations, integration events, customer support and testing
This position typically operates in a standard office setting and manufacturing environment. This role requires use of standard office equipment and may involve exposure to loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE). This position may have exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and non-climate-controlled environments. May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on the environment. This is a fast-paced work environment and requires cross departmental collaboration with independent and team-based responsibilities.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, climb, and move about regularly throughout the day. Must have manual dexterity to operate standard machine equipment as well as standard office equipment. Must be physically capable of tolerating loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE).
Compensation
US Salary Range: $90,000 - $125,000 USD
The posted salary range reflects an estimate based on a variety of compensation factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, education, certifications, specialized skills, geographic location, and business needs. Actual compensation may vary, and this range is subject to change as our compensation structure or market conditions evolve.
